Folding double-hemisphere world map by John Senex, 19 engraved maps, plans and plates, 2 of which folding. (Folding maps with some vertical creasing and light fraying and chipping to edges, variable browning.) Contemporary panelled calf (rebacked, extremities rubbed and scuffed). Provenance: Robert Deane (19th-century ink ownership inscription to flyleaf).
FIRST EDITION. Edward Cooke was second captain on the Dutchess which accompanied the Duke, both under Captain Woodes Rogers, on a privateering voyage around the world. Determined to beat Rogers into print, Cooke issued this one-volume account in 1712. 'The account by Rogers does not contain the translation of the Spanish manuscript describing the west coasts from Tierra del Fuego to California, here profusely illustrated with woodcut outlines of the land, nor does it contain the large number of maps and plates of Cooke's narrative. It is generally accepted that Daniel Defoe used this account of Alexander Selkirk's years on Juan Fernndez Island for his Robinson Crusoe, as it was the first book containing it' (Hill p.128). A second continuation volume was published later in the same year.
