FLEMING, Alexander (1881-1955). Autograph letter signed ('Alexander Fleming') to Captain Paterson, Inoculation Dept, St Mary's Hospital, London, 24 September 1943, thanking the recipient for one of the most appealing letters he has received 'since the newspapers took a hand in penicillin', expressing particular appreciation for a 'beautiful scarf of Murray tartan' made by Paterson's wife, 'To me the fashioning of such a scarf is much more wonderful than anything that we do', and concluding, 'I am glad to be able to say that the more experience we get with Penicillin the better it seems to be but there are many infections on which it has no effect', 1¼ pages, 8vo.

Although Fleming's discovery of penicillin dated back to 1928, his initial findings were not pursued, and it was not until 1942 that the press 'took a hand' in the story, and elevated Fleming to his place as an iconic British scientist.
