SPANISH CIVIL WAR. English-Spanish Grammar. Compiled and edited by The Volunteer for Liberty Organ of the International Brigades. Barcelona: Ediciones del comisariado de las Brigadas Internacionales, June 1938. Original wrappers. SIGNED BY 75 MEMBERS OF THE INTERNATIONAL BRIGADES.
The signatories each give their place of origin, with every part of the British Isles and Ireland represented, as well as the USA, Canada, Australia, Czechoslovakia, Cyprus, Palestine and Cuba. A number of the volunteers can be traced. One is signed 'Jefe de 5° Seccion E.M. 35 Division'; another 'Revolutionary Greetings to a Fighter in Man'. Under pressure from the Non-Intervention Committee, the International Brigades were withdrawn from combat zones from 4 October 1938 onwards, with many of the fighters returning to their home countries. With the Nationalist victory at the conclusion of the Battle of the Ebro in November 1938, the Republican cause in the Civil War was all but lost. A list of the signatories is available on request.
