Lot Essay

This Rhino was made famous by the very first wildlife documentary produced by the BBC in 1955/6 . The documentary was produced by David Attenborough and called 'Armand and Dennis Michalea pioneers in Wildlife photography'. The film was based on the search for the extreemly rare Rhino with the long mutated horn. The Rhino was named by the team 'Gertie', a name which was to become a household name after the first viewing of the documentary. The program was quite significant as it was the first time that a large television audience were able to see African Wildlife in its natural habitat rather than the Zoo. Shortly after this William Timym and his wife were inspired to make a similar search for 'Gertie' which culminated in this bronze.
