A GREEK BRONZE HELMET OF CHALCIDIAN TYPE
LATE CLASSICAL PERIOD, CIRCA 4TH CENTURY B.C.
Formed of heavy sheet, the domed crown with a loop joined to a ring at the apex, the pronounced carinated edge bifurcated at the back, the neck-guard flaring, terminating at the sides with spirals in relief, the contoured brow mirrored above and finely incised with two rows of feline-headed hybrid monsters, the lower with a radiating mane, the fur strands coiling at their tips, the upper with tongues for the body, the brow ridge spiraling into a volute at each temple, scalloped plates riveted below, hinged to the cheek-pieces, each peaked along the front edge and perforated along one side
