A ROMAN BRONZE OINOCHOE
CIRCA 1ST-2ND CENTURY A.D.
With an ovoid body on a high flaring foot, lathe turned concentric circles on the underside, a fillet at the base of the tapering cylindrical neck, with a wide beaked spout, the high arching handle with acanthus leaves along its length, terminating below in a mask of a Triton emerging from a calyx, with wild curly hair, marine beard and equine ears, the silver-inlaid irises deeply recessed, the upper handle plate in the form of a hippocamp protome, with the forelegs joined to the edge of the vessel rim, the high wings undulating along the upraised sides of the handle, the horse head with the eyes inlaid in silver, the wavy mane protruding above the vessel mouth, its tail coiled at the peak of the handle arch
