MUROMACHI - EDO PERIOD (16TH 17TH CENTURY)
The black-lacquered hachi (helmet bowl) of 16th century zenshozan type (the front part higher and more deeply angled than the rear), formed of sixty-two plates closely rivetted and with the suji (ridges) of rounded section built up with lacquer, the tehen no kanamono (metal surround at the aperture in the crown of the helmet) of floral form, the lower tier of shakudo (black alloy of copper and gold), the upper tiers gilt, the five-tier komanju-jikoro (neck guard) of shittsukezane (simulated scales) lacquered black and close laced with blue braid, the fukigaeshi (returns) and mabisashi (peak) clad with outer and inner bands of printed leather and with gilt star-shaped rivets, the fukigaeshi having gilt rope pattern fukurin (rim), mabisashi with shakudo fukurin engraved finely with scrolling, the fukigaeshi with gilt Kaga umebachi mon of the Maeda clan of Kaga province, the later gilt kuwagata dai (fore-crest fixture) pierced and deeply carved with plovers flying over sea waves, gilt kuwagata (stylized horns) and maedate (fore-crest) of a mamukizuki mon (moon crest)
