Marchese di'Frescobaldi
The family of the Marchese di'Frescobaldi, proprietor of some of Italy's most highly regarded vineyards, is at the same time one of the most ancient and one of the most modern and innovative families. Their story began over a millennia ago, and 700 years ago ancestors of today's Frescobaldi family were making wine in Tuscany. Renaissance travels brought members of the family involved in banking as far as China and India. Today's members are no less farsighted. The work being done at all of their properties has earned them a place among the greatest winemakers of our day.
Ornellaia
Founded in 1981 by Ludovico Antinori, Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia is located on the Tuscan Coast, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, between Livorno and the island of Elba. From the beginning, the vision was to create world class wines and this is continued today with a dedicated team lead by winemaker Axel Heinz, who continues to produce wines that are in equal measure immensely enjoyable now and capable of long aging.
The vineyards extend over two adjacent areas with 99 hectares of vineyards in all, 41 surrounding the Tenuta, and the remaining 58 in an area known as Bellaria, which is closer to the sea and located in the rain shadow of the hills to the east, providing a dry microclimate. The soils are volcanic in nature, over gravel and clay. The vineyard is composed of approximately 38 each Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot along with 14 Cabernet Franc 14 hectares and a smattering of other varietals.
