PAINTINGS FROM THE DING ZHONGYING FAMILY COLLECTION
Prominent Chinese medicine practitioner, Dr. Ding Zhongying (1886-1978), was the son of Dr. Ding Ganren (1866-1926), one of the four renowned physicians of Menghe on the Yangzi delta, a region that became renowned for medical expertise. During the Qing Dynasty, doctors of Menghe consciously sought to unite the various threads of medical learning into an integrated tradition centred upon ancient principles. During the Republican period, Menghe physicians were pioneers of modernization of the craft in Shanghai, and were instrumental in the establishment of contemporary Chinese medicine.
Ding Zongying practiced Chinese medicine in Shanghai, where he founded the first Chinese Physicians College. In 1953 he emigrated to San Fransisco, where he settled into the traditional life of a man of letters, frequenting artistic circles and established friendships with painters such as Wang Yachen (1894 - 1983). In particular, he met Zhang Daqian and acted as his physician during his time there.
