Lot Essay

The Garden of Pan (Felton Bequest, National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne), developed by Burne-Jones between 1876 and 1887 through a series of sketches, depicts a beautiful couple seated leaning against each other in an idealised Italianate landscape listening to Pan playing his pipe.
A comparable drawing of the same figure was sold in these Rooms, 26 February 1985, lot 17.
