Le cadran en forme de demi-lune émaillé blanc, portant les chiffres 7, 9, 1, 11, 3 et 5 peints en noir, alternant avec des caractères peints en rouge et représentant sept des 'Douze Branches Terrestres', Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen et You, comprenant également une boussole et un niveau à bulle, le bras ajouré maintenant une cordelette lestée d'un poids, incrustations en verre rouge ; restaurations au dos

The time is shown when, using the compass to point northwards, the shadow of the perpendicular openwork arm is cast on the dial.
Compare with two similar compass-sundials illustrated in The Complete Collection of the Treasures of the Palace Museum - Scientific and Technical Instruments of the Qing Dynasty, 1998, p.25, no.18 and p.27, no.20
