Lot Essay

The Qianlong emperor appears to have had a great desire for novelty and exotic products, and thus the greatest number of pieces decorated to simulate other materials in a playful attempt at 'trompe-l'oeil' or 'trick of the eye' was made during his reign.
Compare the current box with another cloisonné one, ingeniously composed as three stacked scrolls functioning as two tiers of containers and sold in our Hong Kong Rooms, 1 December 2010, lot 3180A.
