This hitherto unrecorded picture is a version of the portrait of Samuel Ward, c.1782-83, in the Derby Museum and Art Gallery (see B. Nicolson, Joseph Wright of Derby Painter of Light, London and New York, 1968, I, p. 223, II, p. 146, pl. 229).
