Lot Essay

The present portrait is possibly a studio version of the signed and dated painting by Antoine Pesne of 1739 in the Staatliches Museum, Schwerin. Poensgen records three other copies, all in the Staatliches Museum Schwerin (op.cit., nos. 113b, 113d and 113e).
