Lot Essay

West seems not to have executed a finished painting of this subject, although he did paint another scene from the prophet's life, Elijah raising the Widow's Son (now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art). The style of the present drawing, with loose, almost jagged lines delineating the prophet's mantle falling to the ground as he is swept away, suggests a very late date.
