Lot Essay

Eugène Fromentin made his first visit to Algeria in 1846, returning home after six weeks with numerous drawings and sketches. Later trips in 1847 and 1853 resulted in the publication of an account of his travels, entitled Un été dans le Sahara, which was published in 1857. Fromentin exhibited regularly at the Salon, and among his masterpieces is a painting of depicting a hunt with a falcon in Algeria, bought by the French state at the Salon of 1863 and now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris
Fromentin was much influenced in style by Eugène Delacroix. His work can be found in museums across the world.
The authenticity of this work has kindly been confirmed by Dr.Barbara Wright.
