Lot Essay

This composition is after the 27th panel in the Galerie d'Ulysse at Fontainebleau, which Primaticcio painted in 1540, and which was destroyed in 1743. Primaticcio's preparatory drawing is in the Albertina, Vienna (S. Béguin et al., La galerie d'Ulysse à Fontainebleau, Paris, 1985, pp. 257-59).
