Lot Essay

Related to Gericault's lithograph of the same subject. The young mother was married to a bootmaker who owned a flat that the artist was renting while he lived in England. The original lithographic cardboard is in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris (Bazin, op. cit., no. 1823), and there are two other preparatory drawings related to the composition (Bazin, op. cit., nos. 1824, 1826).
