Lot Essay

The art dealer John Kasmin approached Hockney before he left the RCA and gave him his first solo exhibition Paintings with People in at his New Bond Street gallery in 1963. The exhibition was a sell out. Kasmin recalled of this first show, 'I knew I had a star on my hands straight away, though David did not have a big head...He took it all with great ease and grace' (Christopher Simon Sykes, Hockney: The Biography, Century, London, 2011, p. 139).
