Lot Essay

Peter Schlesinger met Hockney in Los Angeles in the summer of 1966, when Hockney was teaching a drawing course at UCLA. They became lovers and subsequently travelled around Europe before living together in London where Schlesinger studied at the Slade. The love of his youth, Hockney's portraits of Peter have an informal and intimate feeling. The painful end to their six year relationship was documented in the film A Bigger Splash (1973)by Jack Hazan.
