Lot Essay

James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont (1728-1799), was the first President and a founding member of the Royal Irish Academy. Charlemont was a patron of the architect Sir William Chambers, and commissioned the famous medal cabinet for Charlemont House in Dublin, which is now in the Courtauld Institute, Somerset House.

For the arms of both dishes, see D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, pp. 604 and 713.
