Very finely modeled standing and holding the hem of his sanghati in his right hand and the folds in his left, the face with bow-shaped mouth, aquiline nose, and heavy-lidded eyes flanked by pendulous earlobes, the hair in thick locks over the ushnisha

Lot Essay

In addition to schist, stucco was a popular medium for sculpture in the ancient Gandhara region. A lightweight, malleable medium, stucco readily lends itself to delicate detailing and sensitive modeling, conveying a sense of emotional presence exemplified in this large-scale figure of Buddha. With idealized proportions, beatific expression, and flowing robes enhanced by red and gold polychromy, the serene figure is the embodiment of compassion.
