AN ILLUSTRATED FOLIO FROM THE SHAHNAMA OF FERDOSI: SAM COMES TO SEE THE INFANT RUSTAM
CENTRAL INDIA, DECCAN, PROBABLY GOLCONDA, Mid 16th century
The infant Rustam is held by his grandfather Sam who has travelled to come and see him, Rustam's mother Rudabeh in an orange tunic and flowing white veil is seated behind inside a turreted chamber with hexagonal patterned background, a blue horizon with trees and part of a stone fortification in the background, Persian verses in nasta'liq divided into four columns above and below, set in red and gold ruled margins
