Lot Essay

This composition seems to have been popular with Marwar artists; for a closely related example with the main figures identified as Dhola and Maru, see R. Crill, Marwar Painting, p. 135, fig. 136. Another painting with similar features is held in the Victoria and Albert collection (inv: IS.14-1978) and dates to 1805-1810.
