Lot Essay

The decoration of 'lion and grapevine' on this mirror is based on that found on Tang dynasty mirrors. The combination of 'lion and grapevine' and a lengthy inscription can be seen on another Song dynasty mirror of slightly smaller size (15.4 cm.) illustrated in Wenwu 1982:2, p. 10, no. 28.
