Engraved title with portrait of Philip II on verso, full-page and half-page engravings, folding plan of Cremona, double-page map of the area around Cremona and double-plate of the Cathedral with a view and plan of the baptistery printed on the recto and a plan and view of the tower on the verso, text within ornamental woodcut borders, large woodcut initials and 33 medallion portraits. (Lacking +2, occasional soiling, staining and browning, a few leaves remargined, plates with repairs.) Later vellum (lightly bowed, some worming, head -and tail of spine chipped, hinges starting to crack). Provenance: Doctor Francisco ?Guiffiensis (ownership inscription on title) -- A. Zambellini (blind stamp on title) -- erased stamp on second leaf.

FIRST EDITION. Mortimer discusses the merits and sources of the various portraits, mainly men of Cremona and dukes and duchesses of Milan, including a portrait of Massimiliano of Milan from a, now lost, painting by Leonardo da Vinci.
