OVERBEKE, Bonaventura de (1666?-1706). Les restes de l'ancienne Rome. Amsterdam: Jean Crellius, 1709. 3 volumes, 2° (518 x 400mm). Half-title to vol. I, title in red and black, engraved frontispiece, dedication and portrait of the author, engraved double-page plate of Rome and 146 plates, one double-page, and 33 illustrations, engraved title vignettes and head- and tailpieces. (Portrait and pl.19 of vol. III supplied from a slightly shorter copy and loosely inserted, occasional spotting and browning.) Contemporary mottled calf (extremities rubbed, head and tails of spines more heavily, corners bumped, joints splitting). Provenance: J. Pöhls (19th-century armorial bookplate).
FIRST FRENCH EDITION which followed the Latin edition published a year earlier. Overbeke had made several visits to Rome, where he had drawn and measured a number of the more important classical ruins. At his death he was still transforming these sketches into the engravings for a book and composing the Latin text; the work was completed by his nephew Michel. Graesse V, 66. (3)
