Sir William Orpen, R.H.A., R.A. (1878-1931)
THE REMAINING WORKS FROM THE COLLECTION OF MRS ST GEORGE These drawings are all from the collection of Mrs St George (1870-1938), the daughter of the influential New York banker, George Fisher Baker (1840-1931). She was Orpen's mistress, confidante and soundboard. Their friendship flourished from circa 1906 to 1921 and is represented in numerous letters written by Orpen which are often illustrated. Mrs St George's social standing and connections greatly aided Orpen's developing career, and Orpen increasingly sought her opinion on matters artistic. In 1912 the couple had a daughter, Vivien, who inherited all of these letters and drawings from her mother. Although she donated over 200 works to the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin, the family retained only thirteen works, which are now being offered for the first time. We are very grateful to the Orpen Research Project for their assistance cataloguing lots 29 - 41.
