Lot Essay

The artist was Lady-in-waiting to Elisabeth, Queen of the Belgians (1876-1965). This work is likely one of a series of pastel sketches executed while Belgian Royal family was in residence at the Villa Royale in De Panne. The family relocated to the coast-side town in October 1914 following the German invasion of Belgium that autumn.
