Second edition, revised and corrected. An important source on the French background of the American Revolution, being a chronicle of political and social events in France between 1774 and 1778. It is written in the guise of letters from an English spy at court and covers very closely events in France connected with the American war, including an interview with Franklin in Paris, news of Lafayette's departure for America, an account of the Franco-American alliance, d'Estaing's departure etc. The political events are interspersed with anecdotes on DuBarry, Voltaire, the Chevalier d'Eon, Beaumarchais, and other notable figures of the period, as well as commentary on the arts, morals, etc. Barbier II:175; Sabin 62696.
