FIRST EDITION of this rare record of the private Quaker negotiations with the leaders of the Iroquois confederacy during the French and Indian War. On their own, the Quakers sought Iroquois help to pacify the Delawares, who with French backing were attacking frontier settlements in Pennsylvania and Virginia. The transcript of the meetings, held at Israel Pemberton's house, reveals that the Quakers blamed the disaffection of the Delawares on the policies of the non-Quaker government of Pennsylvania, whereas the Iroquois felt that the Delawares had been too much neglected by the white settlers. The Iroquois promised to send emissaries to the Delawares on behalf of the Quakers. The record of the conferences is preceded by two Quaker appeals to the government for peace, and by a printing of Pennsylvania Governor Robert Hunter Morris' declaration of war against the Delawares, in which he established a £60,000 fund to pay bounties for Indian scalps, and the scalps of captive Englishmen found fighting with the Indians. RARE: according to American Book Prices Current, only the Siebert copy has sold at auction in at least 30 years.
