[QUAKERS]. -- [SMITH, William (1727-1803)]. A Brief View Of the Conduct of Pennsylvania, For the Year 1755; So Far as it affected the General Service of the British Colonies, particularly the Expedition under the late General Braddock. FIRST EDITION. "The principles and some of the actions of the Quakers gave Smith an opening to make here a slashing attack on them and the Popular party, whom he characterizes as 'a factious Cabal, effectually promoting the French Interest, and a dead Weight upon his Majesty's Service'" (Streeter sale II:962). Stevens, Rare 3 (1927) 389 claims "This is a most interesting and important pamphlet ... [The inhabitants insisted] upon the ... passing of a law for the defence of the country against the French and their Indian allies." Can. Arch.
