[RICHARD PRESS]. -- FLEURY, Claude (1640-1723), translated. Petit Catechisme Historique, contenant en abgregeé l'Histoire Sainte et la Doctrine Chretienne. A Short Historical Catechism, containing a Summary of Sacred History, and Christian Doctrine. Detroit: Theophile Mettez, 1812.
12o (170 x 103 mm). Typographical ornaments. Printed in French and English on facing pages. (Some pale browning, pale dampstain at inner margin of first few leaves). Contemporary mottled calf.
FIRST EDITION. A short historical catechism believed to be translated into English by Father Richard (see Greenly, p.ix) and printed at his press in Detroit. Included at the end is a proposal for an upcoming bi-lingual edition of the Epistles and Gospels, a work that proved to be one of the final substantial books issued from the press. Production from the press was curtailed with the outbreak of war in 1812. During the War of 1812, Richard was imprisoned by the British for refusing to swear an oath of allegiance after their capture of Detroit, saying, "I have taken an oath to support the Constitution of the United States and I cannot take another. Do with me as you please." He was released when the Shawnee chief Tecumseh, in spite of his hatred for the Americans, refused to fight for the British while Richard was imprisoned.AII, p.28; Greenly 28; McMurtrie 48; Shaw & Shoemaker 25439.
