Lot Essay

This jar was examined by Arthur Upham Pope in 1961. A letter written by Pope to Willoughby, dated 5 April 1961, suggests that the incised decorations on the base of the spout 'are probably symbols of the Milky Way which was at this time thought to be the ultimate source of water (it was called the sky river in several cultures)'.
