Black-glazed ceramic production began in Italy in the 4th Century B.C. in imitation of Attic pottery. The so-called Malacena workshops of Volterra produced the most elegant Etruscan black-glazed ware. Such vessels were highly sought after and were exported to many centres in Etruria where they were destined mainly for the luxury market. For similar cf. E.
