Lot Essay

The knot count is approximately 9H x 9V per cm. sq.

The arabic numerals 202 at the apex of the mihrab denote the signature of a workshop in Tabriz that specialised in top quality silk rugs and carpets. They wove using a silk weft in contrast to the more frequently encountered cotton. Other examples by the same workshop have been sold in these Rooms on 15 October 1998, lots 314 and 315, 22 April 1999, lot 205, 3 May 2001, lots 9 and 147, and 25 April 2002 lot 118.
