Lot Essay

An enthusiast of natural history paintings and observant travel writer, George Annesley stayed with Lord Wellesey whilst in Calcutta in 1803. During this time Annesley presented Wellesey with at least two paintings of birds, now in the collection of the India Office Library, which bear the same Indian seal.
