SIGNATURE DE CHAUDET, PREMIER QUART DU XIXEME SIECLE
En bronze patiné, bronze ciselé, doré, et marbre orangé veiné blanc et violet, le cadran émaillé inscrit dans une caisse à section carrée décorée d'abeilles flanquée de deux aigles impériaux et surmontée d'un buste en hermès de Napoléon, signé CHAUDET FECIT sur le côté du buste, avec l'inscription à l'intérieur du buste MODELE L.R.

Lot Essay

Chaudet choisit ici la sobriété, représentant Napoléon en hermès, sans baudrier, sans couronne de laurier ou manteau. Ce portrait est diffusé sous l'Empire dans divers matériaux (plâtre, bronze, biscuit) par Chaudet-même, celui-ci en ayant obtenu par décret impérial le monopole.
Cette pendule est à rapprocher de celle conservée au Mobilier National (GMLC 244) présentant un buste en hermès d'Elisa Bonaparte-Baciocchi d'après Lorenzo Bartolini, reposant sur une base en marbre jaune de Sienne dans lequel est inscrit le cadran, flanqué d'armoiries.
Ces deux pendules célèbrent le pouvoir impérial grâce à l'alliance de la sculpture et de l'horlogerie.
