The 'Kindling of Lights', a treatise on the magical properties of letters and numbers, Arabic manuscript on paper, 78ff. as numbered plus one fly-leaf, each folio with between 21 and 26ll. of neat sepia naskh, important words and phrases picked out in red, catchwords, later numbering in ink in the upper and lower margins, occasional verses marked with pyramids of red dots, occasional tables within the text, first folio with title of work and author's name in red, colophon signed, dated and stating that it was copied in the Mu'ayyida Madrasa in Cairo, occasional staining, in later dark green morocco, paper doublures

Lot Essay

This work was copied during the lifetime of the author. Two other copies of the work, one dated to the 16th century and the other to Rajab AH 965/April-May 1461 AD are in the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin (A.J. Arberry, A Handlist of the Arabic Manuscripts, Vols. VI and VII, Dublin, 1963 and 1964, p. 7, no. 4518 and p. 22, no. 5068 respectively).
