Lot Essay

The city of Almeria was founded by the Caliph Abdul-Rahman III of Cordoba on the Mediterranean coast of Spain in 955 AD and was the principle harbour of his domain. Because of its strategic location and silk industry the Emirs of Granada and Valencia fought over Almeria in the 11th century. By 1174-75 when this manuscript was copied the city was under the control of puritanical Muslim Almoravid Emirs and was to remain so until its surrender to the Christian monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella on the 26th of December 1489.

Al-Bukhari travelled through the Abbasid Empire from the age of 16 collecting only the traditions which were trustworthy and reliable beyond doubt. From nearly 300,000 traditions which until then were transmitted orally, he included only 2,602 traditions in his monumental work, al-Jami al-Sahih. The book was completed in 846 AD and covers all aspects of life in Islam such as the method of performing prayers. It is considered the most authentic book after the Qur'an in Sunni Islam.

Two other copies of this work also copied in Almeria were sold in these Rooms, 16 October 2001, lot 29 and 23 April 2002, lot 132.
