Lot Essay

Born in Cuba, Abelardo Morell travels the world and converts a variety of rooms (some spare, others elaborately furnished) into immense camera obscura tableaux. Using a tiny pin-hole, the exterior world is projected upside down in the room's interior. Morell then photographs the resulting layered scene with his 8 x 10 view camera.

Morell has been the recipient of many prestigious awards, notably the Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship in 1993 and the International Center for Photography's Infinity Award in 2011. He has exhibited widely.

Gift of Bonni Benrubi Gallery, New York.

More from Photographs - 1840's to the Present. Sold to support the new London Media Space at The Science Museum
