Lot Essay

For Martin Parr, the preposterousness of our daily lives can be salvaged only though maintaining a sense of humour. The banality of modern times are portrayed in series of work such as 'Common Sense'.
Parr was awarded the Arts Council of Great Britain Photography Award in 1975 and has been a member of Magnum since 1995.

His work has been exhibited internationally, including a major travelling retrospective exhibition from 2002-2004 at the Barbican Art Gallery in London and other prominent European instutions. His photographs are in the collections of a number of significant international museums including Tate Modern, London, the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, and The J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles.
