A FAMILLE ROSE PAINTED GLASS 'KATYDID' SNUFF BOTTLE AND SNUFF DISH

The slender bottle is delicately painted to one side with a katydid standing on a large leafy radish, surrounded by blue chrysanthemum blooms. The other side is detailed with another katydid standing on a cabbage surrounded by pink chrysanthemum blooms on long leafy stems. The dish is decorated with a further katydid.

Lot Essay

The katydid, a relation to the grasshopper, is an auscpicious insect because its name, guoguo is close in pronunciation to the word for official. Katydid and chrysanthemum depicted together is a homophone for 'may you become an official of the first rank'.
