AN INSCRIBED HUANGHUALI CYLINDRICAL BRUSH POT, BITONG
17TH CENTURY
The exterior of the brush pot depicts a scholar beside a rocky cliff raising a brush in his hand, with a four-character seal mark reading 'shang yuan lao ren'. The long inscription ends with the signature 'Xu Fanglai', followed by a four-character seal mark reading 'fang lai zhi yin'.
5½ in. (14 cm.) high

Specialist note

The seal mark reading 'shang yuan lao ren' is the seal of Zhang Feng (? - 1662), a renowned painter active during the late Ming and the early Qing dynasties.

The inscription contains a poem entitled 'Feng Zheng San You Shan', composed by the Tang poet Lu Tong. The poem may be translated as:
The flowers blossom at the place where we met,
the rocky cliffs overlap with the mountains to form thousands of peaks. I wonder when I would be able to meet you again,
a pine tree stands tall on the rock above the cold current.
