Lot Essay

The crest is that of the Barons Crewe, almost certainly for John, 1st Baron Crewe (1742-1829), of Crewe Hall, Cheshire. A Whig politician serving in Parliament for 46 years, he was created Baron at the time of Charles Fox's return to Parliament in 1806. He married Frances Anne, only daughter of Fulke Greville, in 1746. One of the most beautiful women in England, she was renowned for lavish entertainments both at Crewe Hall and her Hampstead villa, at which she hosted the most famous political and artistic figures of her time.
