Lot Essay

While better known for his paintings of horses and dogs, Gilpin is known to have expanded his repertoire to include more exotic subjects. He exhibited a painting of Daniel in the lion's den at the Royal Academy in 1799 (no. 334), and a watercolour sketch by Gilpin of A lion and two lionesses at the entrance to a cave was sold at Christie's, London, 22 March 1988 (lot 84).
