Lot Essay

Little is known of the life and career of Ridderbosch. Neither his place of birth nor death are recorded, though he is mentioned as a Belgian painter of vedute in Brussels, some of which were engraved by A. Ordio in 1797 (Chr. Kramm, De Levens en werken der Hollandsche en Vlaamsche kunstenaars, beeldhouwers, graveurs, en bouwmeesters, V, 1861, p.1368). It is likely that the artist was active in Rome during the early 1780s, as a further two views of Saint Peter's are recorded in the RKD (Anonymous sale; Puttick & Simpson, London, 30 January 1936, lot 116, signed and dated 1782; and Anonymous sale; Christie's, Rome, 13 December 1988, lot 124).
