In the current painting the artist's wife Jean is joined in the kitchen by Thomas Logie Macdonald, the Mayor of Carlisle and the town's Labour councillor.

A similar interior was presented to the Williamson Art Gallery, Birkhenhead in 1959 (A. Bowness, British Contemporary Art 1910-1990, London, 1991, p. 90, illustrated).
