Lot Essay

The present work is a painting prepared by Caulfield for a series of prints that he made in 1987. There are four Wall Plate prints: Highlights, Stucco, Stones and Screen. Richard Riley writes 'A new series of four screenprints, Wall Plates, was published by Waddington Graphics in 1987. The prints duplicated the sharp edges of sections of card he had used in the composition of the preparatory paintings' (exhibition catalogue, Patrick Caulfield, London, Hayward Gallery, 1999, p. 138).

Although Caulfield has signed the present work in a way that implies that it is a 'landscape' shaped painting, it seems logical that the painting should be the same 'portrait' shaped format as the screenprints.
