Lot Essay

Two Greek Dancers shows one of John Craxton's favourite themes from his first years in Greece from 1946. One such painting was bought by Peter Pears and Benjamin Britten and another was given to Frederick Ashton for whose 1951 ballet Daphnis and Chloe, set in modern Greece and incorporating traditional Greek dance, Craxton designed sets and costumes.
